On the thirtieth of December, 1875, a white acquaintance named Buck Cabell invited a Mississippi state senator down into a store cellar for a Christmas drink. The senator was Charles Caldwell — born to an enslaved mother, trained as a blacksmith, one of sixteen Black delegates who wrote a state constitution giving every man the vote. He went down the stairs. The glasses came together in a toast. And in that exact second, a shot came through the cellar window. He didn’t die there.
