Jack Johnson the first Black heavyweight champion who terrified America — born in Galveston, Texas in 1878 to former slaves, Jack Johnson knocked out Tommy Burns in Sydney on December 26, 1908 to become the first Black world heavyweight champion at age 30. His success, his refusal to be humble, and his relationships with white women enraged white America and triggered a nationwide search for a “Great White Hope.”
The full story — the 1910 “Fight of the Century” in Reno where Johnson beat former champion Jim Jeffries in the 15th round before 22,000 people, sparking deadly race riots nationwide; his 1913 conviction by an all-white jury under the Mann Act for traveling with his white girlfriend, with the sentencing judge admitting he wanted to “send a message” to Black men; his seven years in exile, his return and imprisonment at Leavenworth; and the posthumous pardon he finally received in 2018, 105 years later, after years of bipartisan campaigning and Ken Burns’ documentary “Unforgivable Blackness.”
