In 1910, Black farmers owned more than 16 million acres of American farmland — about 14% of all US farmers were Black. By 1997, more than 90% of that land was gone. Today Black farmers own less than 5 million acres, and only one in a hundred American farmers is Black. Researchers estimate the value of what was lost at $326 billion. And here’s what makes it worse: most of it looked legal. Tax sales. Partition sales. Foreclosures. A loophole called heirs’ property, where if just one relative out of ten sells their sliver of a family farm, an outside buyer can force the entire property to auction. Then there was the USDA, which denied Black farmers the loans white farmers received — a discrimination so documented it produced Pigford, the largest civil rights settlement in American history. And where paperwork failed, violence worked. In 1944, Reverend Isaac Simmons was lynched in Mississippi for refusing to give up his land.
